Is One TikTok Worth $150k?

The Boba Breakthrough?
Sabobatage’s first TikTok video has over 1.5 million views. Eric Chen worked with Taylor Chan (from Wongfu Productions) to create a 15 second video that features Nathan Ing drawing a Sabobatage card and getting boba thrown into his face. One of the top comments is “Best ad ever though” and they’re not wrong because this one video helped Chen launch his kickstarter campaign that would go on to raise over $148,000 from 4,000 backers.
Boba On A Budget
Chen shares that content creation is “a key component” in what they do. While some companies may focus on ads or influencer marketing, Chen takes a more rounded approach. Sabobatage’s social content can be broken down as a mix of the following:
-Founder insights
-Behind the scenes of creating the game
-Going to trade shows and going to conventions
This mix allows Chen to build a connection with fans of the game and other creators in the industry. These “free” pieces of content also help balance out other costly ones.
"Knowing it can be challenging to fully experience the personality of our character in a 2D setting, we invested in creating these videos to fully bring them to life," Chen said.
If one were to peruse Sabobatage’s Instagram, they would see a plethora of animated clips featuring the fictional characters of the card game such as Bo, the tapioca pearl. According to Chen, a single 30-40 second animated clip can take a month to craft and animators can be pricey. An artist on retainer is paid $1,800 for an animated project.
He stresses how crucial content creation is for the storytelling of his brand.
“Most of the time, people don't know the face of the brand. The branding aspect of being able to tie yourself to it just helps story tell. It's a good reminder for people it's still a person behind the business. With commerce in general, people will just go and purchase and never really give it a second thought. Just remember there is a soul behind it.”
Since launching, Sabobatage has achieved $1 million in revenue. Chen says they are expected to hit another $1 million in revenue next year.
