What It Costs To Go Viral: Gen Kimura Breaks It Down

What is Asian Creator House?

Asian Creators, let’s talk about them. Besides cat videos, what is the first YouTube video you remember watching? For me it’s the classic “How To Be Gangster” by Ryan Higa. It was the first time that I’d seen an Asian on the “big screen” that wasn’t Jackie Chan or Jet Li in a fighting movie. Little did I know that this video would lead me down the path of saying “no” to becoming a doctor and diving down the journey of content creation.

We’re building the Asian Creator House newsletter to showcase and breakdown the Asian creator economy by diving deep into the stories of Asian creators who deserve more light shown on them. Each week you’ll receive a story about a creator who you may or may not have heard about where we’ll talk about everything that our parents care about (money) to things they might not care as much about (mental health) with the goal to inspire the next generation of Asian creators.

The Process

Gen’s videos from ideation to upload spans 3-4 weeks. Each investigative deep dive involves a detailed template, often stretching up to 50 pages, where research is compiled, titles are finalized, and loose thumbnails are chosen. The process kicks off with brainstorming sessions that sift through 30 different video ideas, incorporating community feedback to refine topics further.

Video production ranges from $1,400 to $2,000+ per video, covering the team's compensation and other expenses.

Team Structure:

  • Videographer: $50 per hour (Approximately 2-3 hours per video, totaling $150).

  • Short Form Editor: Approximately $100 per video for short form video clipping.

  • Creative Director: $250 per video on retainer.

  • Main Editor: Approximately $1,000 per long-form video, assisting with storyboarding.

  • Thumbnail Designer: $150 per long-form video.

  • Business Guy (for sponsored content): Receives a percentage cut.

When asked if he’s breaking even, Gen remarks he’s getting there.

“What's good is that it's getting closer for sure. What helps is obviously sponsorship brand deals. We're also trying to do different things like UGC (User Generated Content). We have a show on Snapchat, and we recently hired an agency to start posting on Facebook for us. But to be able to quit my job, I think I need to have more consistent months to be able to get there.”

** Since the interview, Gen has left his job, ventured into full-time content creation, and taken on hosting duties for some episodes of Jubilee's Middle Ground series on YouTube.
